When looking at an elegant home, one of the main things that sets it apart from the ordinary is the finishing woodwork. While your house may start out plain, it is not difficult to increase its aesthetic value by adding easy-to-install decorative woodwork details. And from an economic standpoint, every $1 spent on beautiful woodwork historically will add $5 or more to your property’s market value. That is definitely worth your time and investment!

There are 5 main types of finishing interior woodwork. They are:

Moldings
Rosettes
Medallions
Corbels
Appliques

And while they are considered “wood” work, these decorative finishes are often made of plaster or high density polyurethane (a plastic compound) as well as the traditional wood.

Moldings

There are 6 different moldings you can use to enhance the beauty of your home.

1) Crown molding

This is the molding that covers the joint where the ceiling and walls meet. It is the most noticeable of the moldings and the one that will add the most dimension, elegance and character to a room. Crown molding can also be used to create interesting shelves and fireplace mantels.

2) Chair rail

This is the molding that is placed 32 inches up from the floor to protect the wall from chairs. Also works well as a way to divide a room top from bottom for decorating purposes.

3) Case molding or casing

This molding is used around doorways, windows and other recessed areas. It is great for covering the construction gaps between your wall and the jambs.

4) Base molding

Sometimes called the baseboard, this molding is situated where the floors and walls meet. It can be decorative but one of its main purposes is to protect the walls when vacuuming or cleaning the floors.

5) Corner molding

This molding is used to cover where other moldings meet at corners. It will give a room an extra elegance but its main purpose is not merely decorative. A corner molding piece will cover the inevitable gaps that occur when trying to meet two pieces of molding at a precise 45 degree angle. Plus a corner molding piece on a protruding chair rail or base molding will give extra protection to your walls and long moldings.

6) Decorative molding or trim molding

These are thinner pieces of molding. They are often used to create “panels” on open wall areas or to enhance other moldings or architectural features.

Rosettes

Rosettes are usually seen as the corner block that covers the difficult 45 degree angle cut where two pieces of case molding meet. Rosettes are either the same width as the case molding or sometimes slightly wider to draw more attention to the area. They can be carved or cast with many different designs in the center to further customize your decorative look.

Rosettes are also used as the base block at the bottom of staircase spindles or other vertical 3-D design features such as columns.

Medallions

Medallions are the ornate, circular or oval decorative pieces that you will see on ceilings around a chandalier. Adding a medallion to a room will instantly dress it up.

Corbels

Corbels are sometimes called bar brackets or architectural brackets. They are used as supports for things like mantels, countertops and shelves. If refered to as brackets they are usually simple but corbels are usually very ornate with beautiful carvings in the woodwork. Corbels can also be mounted alone on walls or in corners as an elegant way to display your treasured pieces.

Wall Appliques

Wall appliques are flat, carved, decorative pieces that are mounted on a wall to enhance the architectural detail of the room. Often they are painted the same color as the wall so they will give the wall a subtle added dimension. They are best if used in large or high-ceilinged rooms. Otherwise wall appliques can make your room too “busy”.
